Last Tuesday (January 19th), the IBGE State Superintendence in Maranhão (SES/MA), by means of the Section of Information Dissemination (SDI), in partnership with the State Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Maranhão (IEMA), started the technical capacity building trainings scheduled for 2024. In the first meeting, held in the facilities of Full IEMA Dr. João Bacelar Portela, in São Luís, the coordinators and managers present at the event were introduced to the IBGE’s history and its activities carried out in Brazil and in Maranhão, through the guided navigation in the Institute’s website and database (SIDRA – System of Automatic Recovery).

José Reinaldo Ribeiro, Geographic Information Technologist of the IBGE/MA, started the training presenting the Institute’s history and its main activities at the national and regional level. Next, participants explored the databases and other digital tools with the purpose of getting familiar with the steps to obtain data from the short-term and structural surveys. “This first meeting focused on presenting the works carried out by our institution, both in the field of Statistics/Surveys and in the field of Geosciences”, highlighted the technologist.

For the technical planning advisor of IEMA, Marcio Lopes, training is fundamental to strategically support the works and planned assessment along the year. “The surveys from the IBGE have essential data for the scheduling, for instance, of our courses. By means of the surveys that explore the labor market, we can better equip our technical structure and, consequently, better define each course in its respective branches”, said Mr. Lopes.

In addition to the pratical part, all the contents presented, as metadata, microdata, Cities@, IBGEteaches, libraries and other materials and tools made available by the IBGE, was planned as a way of answering the main doubts of participants. "Having access to those data makes it possible to understand the economic situation of each municipality too, which enables the implementation of new branches”, emphasized IEMA survey and innovation coordinator Alexandre Costa.

Another aspect which was emphasized by the coordinator is that the data generated by the IBGE aid in the development of survey projects. “Data solidify our projects that are submitted to the development agencies. Recently, based on data obtained on SIDRA database, we had a project approved in the area of Culture focused on ethnic-racial issues”, mentioned Mr. Costa.

At the training openning session, teaching materials were given to the general manager of the Full IEMA, Ms. Nárcia Noleto, and to the pedagogical director of IEMA, Mr. Celso Rodrigues.

Partnership

The partnership with IEMA was established in a meeting held in October 2023, in the SES/MA headquarters, aiming at the capacity-building training of the technical staff, of the teachers and students by means of the IBGEteaches and its data tools.

For 2024, the plan is to take the training to the greatest number of technicians and teachers of the Several Campi of IEMA located in the State’s countryside. According to the technologist of the IBGE/MA, “the school is a space par excellence for the IBGE to operate”

In Maranhão, IEMA operates in different municipalities aiming at professional, scientific and technological education. Currently, there are 34 Full IEMAS which offer Full-time Technical Secondary Education, 02 bilingual IEMAS of Primary Education (one in São Luís and other in the city of Santa Inês) and 26 Vocational IEMAS for FIC courses, aiming at professional training.
