On December 27th, 2023, the IBGE Superintendence in Mato Grosso (SES/MT) participated in a webinar organized by the Group of Studies and Surveys on Quilombola School Education, about the release of the first results for the 2022 Population Census: Color or Race.

The GEPEQ, linked to the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) is directed by PhD Professor Suely Dulce de Castilho, and has been listed under the Research Group Directory of Brazil's Centre for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) since 2016.

The webinar, having as target public the scholars in the Education department at UFMT, was also attended by two renowned educators: Luciene Carvalho, president of the Academy of Letters in Mato Grosso and Professor Carlos Alberto Caetano, PhD in Educational Policies on Diversity from the UFMT.

Márcio Cavichiolli, IBGE’s acting superintendent in Mato Grosso, started the presentation by approaching the results of the population by color or race (the categories being White, Black Brown, Asian and Indigenous). Then, Professor Luciene Carvalho share some valuable insights calling attention to the relevance of the Population Census and to the fact the results represent “a response in an ethnic and racial identity; the figure is also a portrait of people’s awakening.”

Professor Carlos Alberto Caetano repeatedly mentioned the crucial importance of these data to reconfigure public policies on diversity, and he highlighted geographic information play a central role in the creation of inclusive and egalitarian strategies. According to him, Society should “see these data and understand how much of an impact they can have on our actions from the perspective of public policies.”

At the end of the presentations, Professor Suely Dulce de Castilho, a mediator in the event, thanked the participants and the audience, as she reinforced how relevant the dialogue promoted in the webinar is for the advancement of academic knowledge. In addition, she requested that a new presentation on data about the Quilombola presentation be scheduled.

The SES/MT expresses its gratitude to GEPEQ for the invitation and to the academic community of UFMT for the kind reception, which confirm their commitment with the release of population data that are essential for social development in Brazil.
