The series has been produced by the IBGE since the 1950’s, having been released in a single volume in 1960, encompassing the macro-regions identified at the time. The succeeding editions produced studies about the country for the decades of 1960, 1970 and 1980, with a gap in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2016, the IBGE resumed the discussion on a new edition of the study by releasing a volume entitled Brazil – a geographic and environmental view in the beginning of the 21st century.
About the publication - Geography of Brazil - 1970's
The second series of Geography of Brazil is formed by five volumes that represent the Macroregions: North, Northeast, Southeast, Central West and South, respectively. This time, both the Institution and the geographic research related to it form an essentially different system from the previous one from when the first edition was released. At the same time that it shows the reality of Brazil in the 1970s, it is able to illustrate the status of the Brazilian Geography in the period.
The collection of volumes remained aligned with the initial goals – disseminating knowledge on the Brazilian territory, its regional variations and its issues, among a wide range of readers – and it also manifests the new aim of the Institution that was the production of updated geographic information for the decision making process not only in the government level, but also in the private sector.
Within this subject, although the volumes are regional, each chapter represents an analysis aimed at, in a direct or indirect way, the objectives mentioned above. It also approaches the key aspects of the Brazilian space organization, some guidance that ranges from the natural framework, with its results of known natural resources, to the population, city systems, energy, agricultural and industrial activity and transportation, providing a full picture of the national situation.
This detailed aspect of regional information was related to the concern with the varied National Development Plans, that is, to the reduction of regional inequalities. The propose of providing information in a global perspective, represented by the amount of information in the five volumes, including the regional peculiarities, makes this publication even more important. The extension of each chapter as well as the number of illustrations (cartography images, tables, charts and photographs) shows the complexity of the series in relation to the previous edition.
This collection of volumes is aimed at reaching a wide range of readers such as regional planners, teachers, students who can find in it the information and references that their professional qualification may require, and at everyone that is interested in the broad range of issues in the socioeconomic structure. All the volumes are available in the digital version.
