Rural Areas

Description

Rural Areas aim at designing the Brazilian regional divisions based on the geographic dynamics traced by the agroindustrial production in the national territory. In terms of methodology-concepts, it is aligned with the complementarity between geographic production and IBGE’s statistics, proposing an adequate regional base to disseminate the agricultural statistics of this institution.

Rural Areas configure the  kind of regionalization linked not only to the geographic differences that features the Brazilian rural territory, but also in harmony with territories legally marked out for cultural and environmental preservation and the large urban zones in the country. In this regard, the regional division will provide a dissemination of census data closer to society’s demand for information according to territory divisions more and more adjusted to the various forms of occupation seen throughout time.

About the publication - 2015

The project 2015 Rural Areas is the latest contribution in a long tradition of rural studies conducted by the Department of Geography within the process of integration of statistical information and information generated by geographic analyses and studies on national agriculture.

Thus, this project is based on the development of a conceptual and methodological reference to operationalize the new concept of the Brazilian rural reality, encompassing, nowadays, the dynamics of our territory. In this context are included the striking regional differences which characterize the geographic status of a country with such continental dimesnisons as Brazil. Also present are the discrepancies resulting from the many economic flows which take place in this enourmous area and which highlight the exixting differences.

Having as a basis the concepts, methods and operating steps developed in the Technical Report, it was possible to define the 104 Brazilian Rural Areas, formed by the sum of contigous municipalities identified according to codes and numbers which follow IBGE patterns. 

Finally, the Rural Areas now presented have the objective of bringing thedissemination of statistical data closer to the new demands of society concerning the production of information according to territory subdivisions that are adjusted to the new forms of settlement created throughou the time by Brazilian society in our huge national territory.

What are the Rural Areas?

The Rural Areas have the objective of elaborating the regional division of Brazil considering the geographic dynamics created by the agricultural and industrial production in the national territory.

How were the Rural Areas delimitated? 

They were defined considering the concept of regional divisions based on areas and regional studies (or areas of influence) based on networks. The former delimitate contiguous spaces and areas of land use, whereas the latter delimitate polarized spaces structured by functions and flows. Although they are different, the concepts are not exclusive; their combination generates some of the most complex and encompassing regionalization processes. Besides an integrated view of the rural space with national urban centers, the project also includes the presence of wide Indian Lands and Conservation Units, which form, nowadays, a complex mosaic of the Brazilian territory that goes beyond agricultural production itself.


How many Rural areas were identified in the study of 2015?
A total 104 Rural Areas were identified. 

What was the relationship between the Rural Areas and the Brazilian urban space?

The 104 Rural Areas have been designated by one or more cities that articulate those areas. Those cities have been classified according to their importance in the Brazilian urban network, which allows a combined analysis of the Rural Areas identified by the survey with the urban centers of local, regional and national levels of relevance.

How often are the Rural Areas updated? 

The study is updated every ten years, always after the latest Areas of Infuence of Cities - REGIC and the Census of Agriculture from which come the data that form one of the criteria for delimitation of those subdivisions. The IBGE is responsible for adjustments in the update cycles of those products, due to either necessity or convenience.
