IBGE releases a note on the public calamity faced by the State of Rio Grande do Sul

The Board of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), together with the IBGE State Superintendence in Rio Grande do Sul and its 36 agencies, would like to expresse solidarity with the thousands of "gauchos" victimized by the worst climate tragedy in the state's history.

In this devastating scenario, the IBGE, in support of the initiatives and actions developed by the Federal, State and Municipal Governments, coordinated by the Civil Defense, has been working to make its vehicles available to the State government, through the Civil Defense, to expand the assistance to the population in need. The 36 agency heads were instructed to provide municipal governments with data from the 2022 Census that could be useful to give a more precise number of the affected population.

The IBGE agencies in the cities of Cachoeira do Sul, Canoas, Canela, Caxias do Sul, Lajeado, Novo Hamburgo, Porto Alegre, Santa Cruz do Sul, Santa Maria, São Jerônimo, São Leopoldo, Taquara, Veranópolis and Viamão have many of the municipalities under their jurisdictions with large flooded areas, landslides and closed roads. The IBGE Board, through the State Superintendence, advises that survey collection be temporarily suspended in the affected areas, until safer conditions are guaranteed, allowing fieldwork to be resumed.

Civil servants residing in the affected areas, many of whom with water and electricity supply interrupted, should seek to keep themselves and their families safe. For the other servants, the recommendation is, to the extent possible, to continue doing their activities, by means of teleworking. The IBGE Board, through the IBGE Superintendence in Rio Grande do Sul, has advised the heads of the agencies to monitor and update the situation in the municipalities.

The IBGE Board will analyze the data collection in the state in the coming days, with a special focus on national disclosures, and it will study the possibility of extending the collection period for some surveys and additional measures that can help the population and the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Such decisions will be made public soon.
