Note on Life Tables 2020 and Covid-19 pandemic

Released today by the IBGE, the Complete Life Tables for Brazil 2020 provide the mortality indicators that would be expected in case Brazil did not pass through the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, if Brazil did not live a mortality crisis in 2020, life expectancy at birth would be 76.8 years for the entire population, with an increase of 2 months and 26 days in relation to the values estimated for the year of 2019 (76.6 years). For the male population, life expectancy at birth would be 73.3 years and, for women, 80.3 years in 2020.

Complying with Presidential Decree no. 3,266, of November 29, 1999, the IBGE publishes the Life Tables in the Official Gazette since that year. The Life Tables are calculated from population projections, based on data from the population censuses. Adopted by the IBGE since 1991, this methodology is recommended by international cooperation organizations and it is recognized by users of our demographic data, including public offices from the three government spheres and major academic institutions in Brazil.

After the release of the results of each Population Census, the IBGE develops new projected life tables. The last tables were built and projected from the 2010 data, year of the last census operation in Brazil. Likewise, a new set of life tables will be created after the publication of the results of the 2022 Census, when the IBGE will have a more precise estimate of the population exposed to the risk of dying and of the deaths registered in the last decade.

An analysis of the increase in the deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, for Brazil and the Federation Units, can be found in the Civil Registry Statistics, released by the IBGE last Thursday, November 18. The Complete Life Tables for Brazil 2020 are here and the technical note about this release is here.
