Complete Life Tables

About - 2014

In compliance with Article 2 of the Presidential Decree no. 3266 of November 29, 1999, IBGE annually publishes the Complete Life Tables for the Brazilian population, relative to the previous year. The data comprised in this publication is used by the Ministry of Social Security in the calculation of the social security factor for retirement pensions of persons under the General Social Security System.

The current edition results from a projection of mortality levels based on the table elaborated for year 2010, which included data from the 2010 Population Census, infant mortality estimates based on the same census, and information about notifications and official records of death by sex and age. That is a necessary updating procedure when working with indicators and/or prospective demographic models. Furthermore, the updated data will contribute to generate updated parameters on mortality in Brazil for the Population Prospect by Sex and Age for the Period of 2000-2060 – Revision 2013.

Objetivo

A tábua de mortalidade anualmente divulgada, e que apresenta a expectativa de vida às idades exatas até os 80 anos, tem sido utilizada pelo Ministério da Previdência Social (MPS) como um dos parâmetros necessários na determinação do chamado fator previdenciário para o cálculo dos valores relativos às aposentadorias dos trabalhadores que estão sob o Regime Geral de Previdência Social.

Metodologia

A presente tábua é proveniente de uma projeção da mortalidade a partir da tábua de mortalidade
construída para o ano de 2010, na qual foram incorporados dados populacionais do Censo Demográfico
2010, estimativas da mortalidade infantil com base no mesmo levantamento censitário e informações
sobre notificações e registros oficiais de óbitos por sexo e idade. Trata-se de um procedimento
necessário de atualização, quando se trabalha com indicadores e/ou modelos demográficos
prospectivos. Além disso, o desenvolvimento desta atividade cumpre também o propósito de gerar
parâmetros atualizados da mortalidade do Brasil que foram incorporados à Revisão 2013 da Projeção da
População do Brasil por Sexo e Idade para o Período 2000 – 2060.

Histórico

Desde 1999 que o IBGE divulga anualmente a Tábua Completa de Mortalidade correspondente à
população do Brasil, com data de referência em 1º de julho do ano anterior. Esta divulgação tem sido
realizada em cumprimento ao Artigo 2º do Decreto Presidencial nº 3.266, de 29 de novembro de 1999,
cuja redação é descrita a seguir.
“Art. 2°. Compete ao IBGE publicar, anualmente, até o dia primeiro de dezembro, no Diário
Oficial da União, a tábua completa de mortalidade para o total da população brasileira referente ao
ano anterior.”

Description

The Complete Life Tables provide estimates of life expectancy at exact ages up to the age of 80 years old, using as reference the date of July 1 of the previous year.

Since 1999, the IBGE has put out annually, up to December 1st, in the Official Gazette, the Complete Life Tables for the total Brazilian population on the 1st of July of the previous year, in compliance with Article 2 of Decree no. 3266 of November 29, 1999. The Complete Life Tables derive from the Abridged Life Tables table elaborated for the year of reference of the last Population Census, to which are added population data from the respective census survey, infant mortality estimates based on the same census and information about notifications and official records of death by sex and age.

They are a demographic model that describe the incidence of mortality throughout people's life cycle, and its information has been used as one of the parameters for calculating the social security factor for the retirement pensions of workers who are under the General Social Security System.

The main indicators extracted from the Complete Life Tables are the probabilities of death between two exact ages, in particular, the probability of a newborn dying before completing the first year of life, also known as infant mortality rate; and life expectancy at each age, in particular, life expectancy at birth.

The periodicity of the Complete Life Tables is annual. Its geographic scope is national, with results disclosed, by sex and age, for Brazil.

Important remark

The Complete Life Tables are obtained from the Abridged Life Tables, using appropriate methodologies to transform the five-year intervals used in them into one-year intervals in the Complete Life Tables.

Life tables for 2020

The Complete Life Tables for 2020 come from a projection of the mortality levels of the Complete Life Tables built for 2010, in which population data of the 2010 Population Census, estimates of infant mortality based on the same census and information on official registers and notifications of deaths by sex and age were incorporated. Therefore, the Tables for Brazil for the year of 2020 portray the projection of the mortality created with 2010 data, though not incorporating the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the increase of deaths in the Brazilian population. Such effects will be registered when the new Life Tables are created with data from the next Population Census, to be carried out in 2022, when they will be reviewed, taking into account a more precise estimate of the population exposed to the risk of dying, as well as the deaths recorded in the last decade.
