Classifications are used as language systems in the production of statistical information. The standardization of this language is a key condition not only to the consistency of the time series and of the regional and international comparisons, but also to the articulation between information systems or different sources, which are basic assumptions about the quality of the statistical system.

As the manager of the National Classification of Economic Activities - CNAE, IBGE now launches the second edition of CNAE 2.0. This classification is officially adopted by the National System of Statistics to produce statistics by type of economic activity, as well as by the Public Administration to identify the economic activity in registries of legal persons. As before, the current edition includes the Classification structure, the principles of its organization, the definitions and application rules, the explanatory notes of the category contents, as well as the correspondences with CNAE 1.0 and with the Revision 4 of the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities - ISIC. The introduction chapter of the publication brings the changes introduced by Resolution no. 1, of July 17, 2014, of the National Classification Commission - CONCLA, which established a clear separation between the structures of the National Classification of Economic Activities - CNAE and the National Classification of Economic Activities - Subclasses for Use by the Public Administration - CNAE-Subclasses, as well as established the responsibility for the management of each Classification, among other dispositions.

It is worth highlighting that CNAE remained unchanged for the purpose of statistics. It continued in version 2.0 as it needed to comply with the international calendar of revision of statistical classifications.

The information now released is also available on the CD-ROM enclosed in the publication, as well as on the IBGE web portal.

By providing a standard base for the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistics concerning the economic activities, CNAE improves the comparability of this information, both at internal and international levels.
